Kaizen Leader – Leader of Continuous Improvement

Reports to: Vice President and General Manager of Dayton Progress

Based at: Dayton, OH facility

Job Purpose:  Provide leadership and direction to the MPS (Continuous Improvement) department in accordance with the annual business plan.  Champion all activities related to Continuous Improvement (Kaizen) with the ultimate goal of establishing a company culture of Continuous Improvement (Kaizen) in Dayton Lamina.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities:

  1. Work with VP, GM of Dayton Progress to create and implement a plan and strategy for Continuous Improvement in Dayton that supports corporate goals and core values.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to be a change agent, appropriately confronting challenges and problems and effectively overcoming/resolving them.
  3. Focus on cost reduction through regular non-capital Kaizen initiatives as well as application of technology and automation including working closely with all Dayton departments as needed.
  4. Promote development of best-in-class manufacturing for Quality, Cost, and Time.
  5. Taking an enthusiastic, hands-on role to model successful selection, planning, execution, and follow-up of Continuous Improvement projects and activities.  Use these activities to teach and develop necessary skills in members of the department, management, engineering and others in the company.
  6. Provide expert technical direction to the MPS department and others to optimize the total manufacturing process from Order Entry to Shipping.  This includes direction on performance reporting including analysis of results.
  7. When planning for, setting up, and starting up new equipment and processes, work with Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality to develop a fully engineered process with consideration for all aspects of processes and methods, maximizing results for Quality, Cost, and Time.
  8. Adopt and implement Best Practices from Dayton Lamina and Suruga facilities for like operations to ensure standardization between DLNA and Japan as well as standardization of like processes in NA.  Maximize corporate investments in new manufacturing methods.
  9. Work with VP, GM of Dayton Progress to develop and execute the annual budget and business plan for your department, ensuring that all operational KPI’s are met.
  10. Work with VP, GM of Dayton Progress to develop and maintain a structured, systematic process for managing and controlling all projects to meet or exceed performance targets and completion dates.
  11. Focus on Manufacturing in the Dayton, OH location with support for Continuous Improvement needs in other Dayton Lamina operations as needed.
  12. Champion activities related to annual visit by Kaizen experts from Japan HQ.

Requirements:

  1. Minimum of BS in Engineering or related field required.
  2. At least 5-8 years of strong, proven, shop floor experience in improving manufacturing operations using a variety of methods and tools.
  3. Certification in Lean Manufacturing and/or Six Sigma Black Belt required; experience in using 5S, Visual Management, and time study techniques strongly preferred.
  4. Strong analytical capabilities along with strong verbal and written communication skills required.
  5. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office apps including Excel, Word, and Power Point required.
  6. ERP-literate including experience with ERP systems such as JD Edwards, SAP, PLEX or others preferred.
  7. Must demonstrate enthusiasm, passion, and a sense of urgency for Continuous Improvement along with strong interpersonal, collaborative, and leadership skills
  8. Able to travel internationally and domestically (10% to 20%)

Director of Engineering and Continuous Improvement (MPS)

Summary

The Director of Engineering and Continuous Improvement will provide managerial leadership and direction to the Engineering, MPS (Continuous Improvement), and CAM programming departments, in accordance with the agreed-upon business plan.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, planning, and implementation of improvements to current methods and processes as well as next generation methods and processes for Dayton Lamina North America, primarily Ohio. This includes strong focus on cost reduction through shop floor Kaizen, application of new technology, and automation. Close collaboration with all Dayton departments is required.
  • Support Manufacturing needs for technical direction as it relates to processes, methods and technology through your team of experts to create the best-in-class manufacturing for QCT (Quality, Cost, and Time/Delivery).
  • Provide expert technical direction to the Engineering, MPS, and CAM programming departments to optimize the complete manufacturing process from Order Engineering through Shipping.
  • When implementing new equipment and technology, develop a fully engineered process with consideration of all aspects of the methods that will be used to maximize QCT.
  • Adopt and implement Best Practices from Dayton Lamina and Suruga facilities for like operations to ensure standardization and maximize the corporate investment in new manufacturing methods.
  • Drive implementation of Digital Manufacturing through the implementation of 3D2M technology for Specials in order to continuously improve QCT while reducing dependency on operator skill.
  • Lead the development and implementation of new processes and methods for new products to be produced within Manufacturing.
  • Coordinate and work closely with Maintenance on installation and development of new equipment and processes.
  • Maintain and develop a systematic process of managing and controlling projects to meet performance targets and completion dates for all members of the team.
  • Develop and execute the annual budget for your departments.
  • Support Engineering and MPS requirements of other Dayton Lamina operations and be a major driver on standardization of like processes across the company.
  • Decrease the Total Maintenance costs on an annual basis through TPM and investments.
  • Develop and implement an energy policy and goals to reduce energy consumption per unit on an annual basis.
  • As a member of the Suggestion Committee, champion the implementation of the suggestions adopted that relate to your departments.

Qualifications

  • BS in Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of ten years of proven managerial experience in Manufacturing operations and Engineering
  • Minimum of five years experience in using various continuous improvement (kaizen) techniques such as Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, 5S, Visual Management, and time study to improve productivity and reduce cost.
  • Strong record of accomplishments demonstrated by measurable successes.
  • Strong verbal leadership, communication and computer skills also required.
