Shear Angles

Shear Angles can be applied to all punch points. These angles are used primarily to reduce slug pulling. Single and Double Shears can be used to reduce the punching force as well as minimize slug pulling. These alterations are prepriced and do not add to the standard delivery of the product.

Shear Angles are also available on Classified Shapes, but are available as special order only.

For Round Punches Only

  • XS19 Nail Point
  • XS20 Chamfer
  • XS21 Conical

For Round and Shape Punches

  • XS22 Double Shear
  • XS23 Single Shear
  • XS24 Single Shear Angle with Flat

Specifications for these shear angles can be found in the individual product catalogs.

Standard head flat and dowel locations are at 0°. For ball lock punches the standard ball seat location is at 90°.

Simply add the alteration code, and the angle desired, to your punch catalog number. Tolerance on all angles is plus or minus 15 minutes.

Surface Treatments and Coatings for Improved Productivity

Dayton Progress

Dayton's leading-edge coatings and other unique surface treatments have been developed to improve inplant performance by increasing tool hardness and wear resistance.

Surface Treatments

Ultra-hard (harder than carbide), high-aluminum coating. Provides high temperature resistance. Well-suited for applications where surface heat is generated. Ideal for HSLA, dual phase, and TRIP steels. Upgrade over XCN. Approx. hardness: *Vickers 3400.

ZertonPlus™ (XNA)

Superior hardness (harder than carbide); provides superior abrasive wear resistance and excellent lubricity. Provides highest temperature resistance, thermal shock stability, & hot hardness. Approx. hardness: *Vickers 3200.

Adhesive Wear

A solid lubricant coating. Provides both lubricity and wear resistance not available from other PVD or CVD processes. Ideal for aluminum, copper, pre-painted, and galvanized steels. Approx. hardness: *Vickers 2000.

Diamond-like carbon coating. Combines high hardness with an extremely low coefficient of friction. Good protection against abrasive and adhesive wear. Ideal for aluminum. Approx. hardness: *Vickers 5000.

Super-smooth finnish combined with advanced DLC coating for a very low coeficient of friction with extremely high wear resistance. Approx. hardness:  *Vickers 5000.

Super-smooth finish combined with a DLC coating for a very low coefficient of friction with high wear resistance. Excellent for stamping aluminum. Approx. Hardness: Vickers 2800.

Extrusion Coatings

The ultimate coating for improved resistance to galling; excellent wear resistance, superior surface finish, and high lubricity. Ideal for extruding and forming applications. Tolerance is ±.0002". Approx. hardness: *Vickers 3100.

XNAProgress (XNAP)

Ultra-hard coating that absorbs shear stress; provides excellent high-temperature resistance. Ideal for stamping where tools are exposed to extreme stress profiles. A good alternative to TD coating without the dimensional changes associated with that process. Approx hardness: *Vickers 3200.

Miscellaneous Coating

Excellent adhesion, high toughness, and good corrosion resistance. Primary applications are metal forming (copper, brass, & bronze), metal die casting, and plastic injection molding. Approx. hardness: *Vickers 1800-2100.

* Vickers used when RC exceeds 80.

Put an End to Slug Jamming with Increased Taper Relief

XAR diagram

Tapered relief Versatile die buttons provide maximum die life and maintain excellent slug control. Versatile standard die buttons have a taper of ¼ degree per side. This taper has proved to work in most applications. There are times when more taper is desirable. More taper provides better evacuation of the slug when punching soft material. As soft slugs begin to stack they compress slightly and this causes expansion. The expanded slugs wedge in the tapered relief. This is normally not a problem when harder material is punched.

Slug expansion can occur when the hole diameter is close to being the same as stock thickness. This often occurs when punching very small holes. Normally larger holes, exceeding stock thickness, are not a problem.

You may want to consider an XAR alteration available from Dayton Lamina if:

  • You are experiencing slugs stacking in the relief of your dies.
  • You are designing a die that will punch soft material.
  • The ratio of stock thickness to hole diameter approaches 1:1.
  • Hole diameter is small.

This alteration will give you a 1-degree per side taper to minimize the potential for slugs stacking in the relief area.

XAR diagramImportant Note

If you are replacing old die buttons with new ones with the XAR alteration, you may not have a large enough clearance hole through your die. Although it is large enough to accept the slug, a "shelf" could be created because the bottom of the relief will be larger on the altered die button than on the standard die button you currently use.

Remember to specify XAR at the end of the catalog number.

DayKool - Cryogenically Treated Punches for Increased Wear Resistance

DayKool™ is a unique combination of cryogenic treatment and heat treatment available on all punches and pilots. The DayKool process treats parts with liquid nitrogen vapor to a temperature of minus 300 degrees F. It is reported that treatment at this temperature not only transforms more retained austenite to martensite, but also creates metallurgical changes in the structure. The change creates a dispersion of extremely fine carbides in the martensite phase. The dispersion of carbides throughout the structure explains the improvements in tool life that have been demonstrated in various applications.

DayKool will not cause size change in the most commonly used diameters. Shank sizes over .750"/20mm can grow slightly. For this reason they must be handled separately and are priced by quote. Smaller diameters are pre-priced and add only 1 day to the standard Firm Delivery Schedule.

Consider these advantages

  • Increased wear resistance. Finely dispersed carbides provide more evenly distributed wear. The result is less sharpening time because less material needs to be removed.
  • There is no loss of wear resistance after sharpening, unlike some applications using coatings.
  • Produces a tougher product due to the release of internal stresses.
  • Longer die runs and less downtime.
  • Inexpensive.

Dayton Slug Control System

Guaranteed Solution To Slug Pulling

Dayton Slug ControlDayton Slug Control is a method of reducing the risk of slugs being pulled to the die surface during withdrawal of the punch. The slugs are trapped in the land of the die buttons until they fall freely through the relief. It has no effect on hole size and will not require any changes in your regrind practices. Dayton Slug Control is effective throughout the life of the die buttons.

Customized To Your Application

Slug Control is based on your application, insuring that you are getting a customized remedy to solve your slug pulling problem. Each die button is produced based on information you supply. It requires no redesigning of your tooling, no special drawings, and it is on a Firm Delivery Schedule. On standard die buttons add three days to the normal delivery. For example round Versatile die buttons with the Slug Control alteration will ship in four days. This alteration is not limited to Versatile products. It works in any die button whether it has a counterbored hole or a tapered hole in the slug relief area. It works in shapes as well as round holes.

Slug Control is designed around a series of interference points on the slug that are produced during penetration into the die button. An exact amount of “trap” is applied to the slug to prevent it from returning to the die surface. This innovative process uses a series of grooves inside the die button. The slug expands into the grooves, effectively trapping it. This method of controlling slugs is so dependable, it’s guaranteed!

Test this Slug Control system in your die and we will offer you this unconditional guarantee: Use Dayton Slug Control in a stamping die now pulling slugs. If for any reason you are not completely satisfied, we will refund the full cost of the Slug Control alteration. (We cannot guarantee the retention of slugs when clearance exceeds 10% per side.)

Using the Dayton Slug Control system reduces or eliminates the following:

  • Diemaker treatments such as:
    • breaking all cut edges
    • bellmouthing die buttons
    • dome or shear angles on punch points
    • dulling punches
    • notching punches
    • entering punches deeper
  • Punch breakage due to double hits
  • Costly vacuum sleeves
  • Die maintenance time
  • Press downtime, wasted material and lost man hours

The advantage of Dayton’s Slug Control system over other methods is that it is guaranteed.
