DieMax XL Die Springs

Springs you can rely on
A combination of enhanced raw material, optimal spring design, innovative manufacturing processes, and broad distribution channels allow the DieMax XL® spring to yield the best, most dependable performance and availability combination, time after time.
Spring Wire
Danly springs are manufactured from premium spring quality steel. The high tensile strength and superior heat resistance wire characteristics contribute to the low-stress, long life spring design.
Enhanced Design
Our spring starts with a modified trapezoidal cross section and changes to a “D” cross section after coiling. This wire cross section has significantly lower stress levels during compression compared to competitor designs. The “D” cross section also allows for more coils per spring while providing a greater amount of spring travel to solid when compared to competitor springs.
Modified trapezoidal cross section of rectangular wire springs changes to a “D” cross section during coiling to achieve a low stress level that means longer spring life.
Physical Dimensions and Load Ratings
Computer controlled coiling and spring setting equipment allow tight control over the critical spring characteristics. Every manufactured lot of DieMax XL® springs is carefully inspected for hole/rod fit, free length, spring rate, solid height, squareness and physical appearance. All inspection results are recorded and analyzed to ensure compliance to quality standards. These tight tolerances and highly inspected attributes guarantee the springs will work freely over the rods or freely in the holes specified without binding. They also ensure that the free lengths, solid heights and spring loads are compatible from spring to spring and lot to lot for predictable, long-life performance.
Ends of each spring are closed and ground square to assure that the spring will stand on either end and provide a maximum bearing surface.
Manufacturing Processes
In addition to the optimal, low-stress spring design, the continual investment in the most advanced coiling and spring processing equipment allows Danly to offer a premium, long-life, mechanical spring solution. From the computer controlled spring coilers with in-line SPC data collection, the springs are routed through a series of steps including shot peening to reduce working stresses, and set removal which ensures the spring length and load will not relax in the tool.
Using the latest in CNC coiling technology, springs are produced with much better predictability and consistency in performance, rates and lengths.
Operators use Statistical Process Control (SPC) software to ensure that every production process meets our high quality standards.
Spring testers track and verify consistency in spring dimensions and rates with custom spring testing software.

Formathane Urethane

What is FORMATHANE?
FORMATHANE is a high-quality line of advanced urethane compounds and products, chemically engineered for the metalforming and fabricating industry.
What makes FORMATHANE more than just another urethane?
First, the knowledge and experience that we have gained through our business life has been directed into FORMATHANE. Next, FORMATHANE starts with the finest raw materials, then processes them using state-of-the-art casting equipment to produce urethane compounds with consistent physical and dynamic properties.
The result
FORMATHANE compounds offer the ultimate in tensile strength, abrasion and tear resistance, load-bearing capabilities, and compression-set properties.
Formathane® Urethane is specially engineered to withstand the rigors of metalforming. It has superior cut, puncture, and abrasion resistance and will not break down leaving particulate debris. Formathane® is corrosion resistant and is unaffected by oil, chemicals, and solvents. Formathane® is available in industry standard shapes and sizes.
Formathane® Die-Cover film prevents die-marks on decorative and pre-painted metals while using your existing dies. Die-cover film is ideal for use in press-brake forming. Die-cover film is available in thicknesses of 0.020” and 0.031” and roll widths of 4, 6, 8, 12 and 36 inch.

Urethane Stripping & Forming Products

Sheets, Rods, Bars, Tubes, Springs
Closed End Punch Strippers
Closed End Urethane Strippers assure positive stripping and at the same time dampen punch vibration by gripping around the punch point. Since vibration can lead to premature punch failure, using DAYTON PROGRESS Urethane Strippers will increase overall punch life. The closed end feature holds thin stock flat during the stripping cycle, eliminating the problem of damaging the stock strip.
And that's not all...
Because of a unique curing agent, DAYTON's Urethane Strippers develop more load-bearing capacity than similar urethanes. This special curing agent also contributes to consistent pressure ratings.
SMART-Strip™ Hard Face / Dual Durometer Urethane Strippers
A DAYTON PROGRESS Exclusive
- Stamping shapes in thin material?
- Stamping pre-painted material?
- Short runs?
- Piercing on angles or complex contours?
- ...Any application where using a metal spring stripper is problematic or just not cost effective.
The answer is the new SMARTStrip. Available only from DAYTON PROGRESS.
The body of the closed-end punch stripper is made of fl exible, softer urethane elastomer 95A, enabling defl ections up to 15%.
The 75D durometer hard face is elastic, durable and does not mark the surface of the sheet metal or prepainted material.
The SMARTStrip works similar to a metallic spring stripper plate that is machined to match the face of the punch tip.
Unlike strippers that have a piece of plastic or metal glued to the end, the hard face on the SMARTStrip can not separate from the body.
Headed Strippers
- Designed to comply with NAAMS™ (North American Automotive Metric Standard) & FORD World Standard.
- The headed design prevents the strippers from falling into die.
- Fits most makes of standard retainers for head type and ball lock type punches. Standard durometer: 95A
Headless Strippers
- Ideal for punching odd shaped holes.
- Assure positive stripping.
- Increases punch life, as punch stripper supports the punch tip, by dampening the vibration of the punch, as it pierces the sheet metal.
Sheets, Rods & Bars
Urethane bars are specially-molded die-pads for press brake bending applications. Rods are used as strippers, pressure cylinders, in bulging applications, as tube bending mandrels, & for machining.
Springs/Tubes
Advantages of urethane springs, open end strippers and tubes:
- High pressures
- Closer center distances
- High tear resistance
- Oil resistant
- Punch vibration dampening
- Easy installation and replacement - No need for set screws or stripper bolts
- No shrapnellizing (flying to pieces, when fractured under load) thus preventing injury to worker and damage to the die.
- Conventional heavy duty die springs obtain up to 500 lbs. per 1/8” deflection, compared to 2600 lbs. per 1/8” deflection on urethane springs.
NAAMS Standard
High load-bearing capacity, extraordinary toughness and high impact resistance characterize Dayton NAAMS™ compliant strippers. These features provide high stripping pressure, minimize abrasion and provide excellent wear resistance. The urethane compound prevents marring of metal surfaces and is perfect for pre-painted materials where the integrity of the surface can not be compromised.

In addition, all springs are color-coded for easy identification of load range.
Corrosion-resistant Dayton die springs are made from pre-tempered chrome silicon wire to improve dimensional accuracy, minimize high-stress cracking, optimize the working life of press and mold dies, and help reduce downtime. Many manufacturers specify Dayton die springs to ensure optimum operation in heavy industry applications, including: automotive; aircraft; appliance; electrical; and electronic.
Quality & Performance
From the incoming raw material (tested for tensile strength, dimensional accuracy, and surface quality) to the finished product, every Dayton die spring undergoes continuous quality control to ensure optimum product performance. In comparison testing, Dayton die springs consistently outperform and outlast other major brands.
All Dayton die springs are stress relieved after coiling, then compressed to solid to enhance fatigue life. Further, they are ground square at both ends, then shot-peened. (Shot-peening supplements compressive strength to reduce stress and extend spring life.) Finally, all finished springs are electro-statically coated with a durable, anti-corrosive vinyl, and color-coded for easy identification of load ranges.
Ordering Information
Dayton die springs are ordered according to: the amount of pressure applied to the spring (see "Load Deflection Table"); the hole diameter (which determines the rod diameter); and, the free length of the spring (see drawing on usage category page). On each order, please specify quantity and "Catalog Number."
In the example below, the first "Catalog Number" is DMD37-100. "DMD" refers to Medium Duty Inch. "37" refers to a 3/8" hole diameter and 3/16" rod diameter. The "100" designation further defines the product with a free length of 1". The "Load Deflection Table" on each catalog page provides percentage of deflection, travel to solid, and load @ 1" or 1mm deflection to help determine the exact spring to select. The second product code shown is for an extra heavy duty metric spring.
The "Efficient Operating Range" of any spring should not be exceeded. For safe operation, when changing from another manufacturer to a Dayton die spring, verify that the travel of both springs is the same.
